July Update

 

We are now several months into our resumed volunteer program – and are thrilled to have safely welcomed hundreds of new and returning volunteers back to Pine Ridge. As we have done for 24 years, we spend each week building things – and building relationships – alongside the Oglala Lakota people.

But this year has not been easy. Record prices for fuel and building materials are a challenge. During just one week in June, our fleet traveled about 3,500 miles in support of our program! With fuel prices on the reservation above $5.00 per gallon at the time, we purchased thousands of dollars in fuel. Similarly, expenses for lumber are extreme. Costs are double, and sometimes triple what we were paying pre-COVID in 2019.

Despite these challenges, our work goes on. Through June, we have provided more than:

  • 60 beds

  • 30 sets of decks/steps

  • 30 outhouses

  • 10 skirting jobs

  • 10 handicap ramps.

At our “Feather II” community gardens, we have successfully planted our 2.5-acre garden with a variety of fresh produce, supplemented by our two high tunnel greenhouses.
