August Update
Responding to community needs, and embracing the Lakota way of life, for 24 years, Re-Member has built things and built relationships with the Oglala Lakota people, and our volunteers from across the United States and around the world.
Founded in 1998, Re-Member is among the longest serving non-profit organizations on Pine Ridge and is not affiliated with any religious, political, or policy group.
Each year, we complete hundreds of requests for assistance. Yet, the demand always exceeds our capacity to help. Our 2022 request list for beds, outhouses, trailer skirting, handicap ramps and steps includes more than 250 jobs pending as of today.
We are working with tribal members and schools to expand our community gardening program in support of food sovereignty efforts. We spend each winter delivering hundreds of loads of firewood and providing financial assistance by purchasing propane and making electric payments for families in all corners of the reservation.
Of equal importance, we spend time each week attending community events and hosting daily cultural speakers. We support artisans, and local businesses operated by tribal members.
Our work has always been guided by the aspirations of tribal members who are generous with their wisdom as builders of understanding.
Recently, the Oglala Sioux Tribe has taken action against a non-member who was distributing offensive literature attacking the Lakota way of life. Tribal Council has also initiated a registration and review process for churches and missionaries seeking to operate on the reservation. As Re-Member is not a church and explicitly forbids proselytizing by our volunteers, we have continued our work uninterrupted.
We are grateful for your support, and invite you to review the following ways that you can continue to provide for Re-Member’s work across the Pine Ridge Reservation.
