With Gratitude And Anticipation: A January 2022 update

Once again, we find ourselves reflecting on a challenging year. As we continue to adapt to our COVID-modified world – and almost two full years without volunteers – we have maintained our twenty-plus year presence in service to the Pine Ridge Reservation community.

Whether you have sent a financial contribution or material donations, purchased something from our online store, or took a moment to share words of encouragement on a social media post, your support has made our work possible. Thank you.

Despite volatile lumber and commodity prices, a serious drought here in western South Dakota, and another year of being closed to visitors, we have continued to respond to immediate needs, provide services, and plan for the future of Re-Member.

As we welcome 2022, we are optimistic that conditions will allow us to welcome volunteers back to Pine Ridge. As we first said in March of 2020: The safety of our volunteers, and the peace of mind and good health of Pine Ridge residents remains our top priority.

We have worked closely with the Oglala Sioux Tribe’s COVID-19 Task Force, and will be fully compliant with the tribe’s guidelines. Although we continue to plan for a full volunteer season – and will wait until February 1 to announce the status of our March trips – we can share the following details today. Re-Member has developed a thorough COVID-19 safety plan in response to the OST guidelines. Our safety plan requires that ALL volunteers agree to the following:

  • Submission of proof of COVID-19 vaccination to the Volunteer Trip Coordinator for review by tribal authorities. Per tribal guidelines, unvaccinated volunteers will not be permitted.

  • Wearing of face coverings when in public and when in the presence of residents of the Pine Ridge Reservation.

  • Social distancing of at least six feet whenever possible and practical while in public or in the presence of residents of the Pine Ridge Reservation.

  • Cleaning and disinfection of worksites, eating and living quarters, and other areas that are a potential area for risk of transmission.

  • Monitoring of staff and volunteers for COVID-19 symptoms on a daily basis to include temperature taking and assessing for any symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, loss of taste/smell, etc.

Any trips that must be cancelled by Re-Member will be eligible for a full refund, or a roll-over of paid funds for future trip fees. If you elect to donate your trip fee to Re-Member, a tax-receipt will be issued for the full value of your donation.

Additional information and any pertinent updates will be shared with group leaders as available.

Program Supervisor Applications Now Available

Re-Member is now accepting applications for short-term staff for our 2022 season. Our Program Supervisors are critical to the operation of Re-Member. This position affords individuals the opportunity to experience Pine Ridge and Re-Member for an extended period of time while assisting Re-Member in fulfilling its goals.

Those offered a position must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination, and adhere to additional health and safety guidelines as required by the Oglala Sioux Tribe.

Please visit our website to learn more, and to download application materials.

On behalf of the Oglala Lakota community we serve, thank you for your continued support.
