Native Americans' Day Weekend: Updates from Re-Member

In South Dakota, the second Monday in October is Native Americans’ Day.

The designation originates with a decision by Governor George Mickelson in the late 1980s to seek “reconciliation” between Native Americans and whites after historically bad relations. Mickelson asked the Legislature to declare 1990 a “Year of Reconciliation” and to rename Columbus Day as Native American Day. The measure passed unanimously.

Increasingly, states and municipalities are adopting Indigenous Peoples’ Day in addition to, or in place of Columbus Day. By Presidential Proclamation, the United States is observing Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Columbus Day on Monday.

As part of our observance of the holiday, the Re-Member staff traveled to the suburbs of Minneapolis for a celebratory gathering with about 100 of our volunteers and supporters in the area. It was wonderful to return to our first in-person gathering since 2019. We enjoyed an evening together, reflecting on the 2023 season, and looking ahead to 2024. For those who were unable to be with us, we look forward to sharing more details with you in the coming weeks and months.

A Change In Seasons, An Update On Our Work

The beginning of October marks a seasonal change in our work. As our construction work winds down, and the fall harvest in our gardens concludes, we take a moment to reflect on the accomplishments of the past several months.

More than 350 projects were completed, and more than 1,000 pounds of produce have been distributed to the community. We give thanks to the efforts of almost 600 volunteers, and thousands of supporters from across the country and around the world who made this possible.

Save The Date: Give The Gift Of Warmth On “Giving Tuesday”

Over the weekend, temperatures dropped below freezing for the first time this fall. The winter heating season is quickly approaching. In the coming weeks, we will begin to distribute firewood, and prepare for the long winter ahead.

Please save the date for Tuesday, November 28 as we fill the trucks with your generosity during our annual Giving Tuesday fundraiser for winter heating assistance.

Learn more about the program, and be an early supporter with your gift today by visiting our website.

Thank you for your continued support. Happy Native Americans’ / Indigenous Peoples’ Day!
